Lazer Present. Fools Garden Black Conga. Max Loderbauer. One could sense it has been taken from some obscure traditional music from god knows where Time to place your bet Well, this is the first option obscure traditional I started playing a mix beginning with this track to a friend of mine not what you would call a minimal techno freak The original lasts 3'48''. It's a soulful, dramatic, hypnotizing and exciting piece of live music Debate aside, I'm thankful to Villalobos for opening my ears ans hopefully some others to some original material like this.
But next time, some acknowledgment to the obscure folks blowing the horns would be much appreciated Yes, at first or second, or third listen it's just a repeating loop-based track. But if you listen to the song 1 minute through, and listen at 30 minutes through, all the subtle differences that build up over time become much more apparent. Which is the genius of this track. Each fragment, each sequence, each loop, each sample, is mixed in and out, shuffled, and left to drift so that the end product is quite a different beast from the sampled horns that open this track.
Not to mention that its got an incredibly addictive beat. I'm not a club kid and I don't really attend DJ 'events' but I've heard this is killing it on the dance floor in Berlin.
Did I mention those horns are catchy? Wow so many comments in so little time, this tune must be something of an event This is the most mental piece of dubby house you're likely to hear But strangely it works like hell on a dancefloor as i could witness Luciano playing it and burning the floor the other night.
Production-wise, Ricardo has a gift to take the simplest, purest elements and work 'em till sickness. At some point the tune seem to live on a life of its own, like some kind of demon or magical entity. But fascinating it certainly is.
This is extreme dope music, in all senses of the word. I can understand the negative comments about this release. However, I do like this tune and I did buy it the other day, because I just think it's fun. I like the brutal and daunting statement that Villalobos makes by making this track 37 minutes long. But apart from that the brass hook is catchy as hell and puts a smile on my face every time, just like Easy Lee and Que Belle Epoque, in all their cheesiness, do.
Whoever said that minimal music has to be dark or gloomy all the time? When it comes to its production this record is nothing new, but at the same time this track will prove unavoidable like, let's say, French Kiss by Lil Louis, which is annoying, funny, catchy and arguably far too long as well. Probably, if Ricardo cares to make a 4-minute edit, it might eventually bring him a top hit First of all I'd like to ask for an update in the rating system here on Discogs.
Instead of the system it should be expanded to range from -5 to 5 and this release from Villalobos surely proves that it has to be implemented on Discogs. Rarely does it occur that such a pretentious release see the light of day and at the same time so clearly express what is so wrong in the minimal House scene.
When you get carried away by such a hyped release and praise it like many people do it only shows why minimal doesn't go anywhere and why people wants it to be like that. It's safety plain and simple. There's nothing which can spoil your perfect drugrelated buzz and honestly - when something based on only the dullest drum thud carries on for more than half an hour and theres a sudden change I'd praise every single higher power of the universe to drag me out of the ultimate misery of complete boredom.
Although I think that as a dj, Ricardo is cool as hell, I keep wondering what he tries to do in his productions. Instead of keeping them to a usable and listenable length, every new release appears to get longer and more tedious. This one must be the worst yet! The beats and especially the bass show some cool development in Pt.
Undoubtedly he will make it sound good in his own sets, but I sure hope that other dj's will keep their hands of this tune This piece of music is of an incredible depth. Sure it is in the details but the devil is in the details. Of course the beat is hammering, rather upfront and sustaining the 37min piece all along. But again, check the details, check how often the bassline is switching to something completely new, how much real depth is in this piece.
I normally try not to comment on releases unless I think they are really amazing or really god awful, and unfortunately for Villalobos, this one falls under the latter. I couldn't even believe this track the first time I heard it, and I still can't get over how much praise this is getting across the board.
It's such absolute trash it's ridiculous. It's on the level where if you had a friend who just got into making music on Fruity Loops and sent you this exact song asking what you thought, you'd avoid replying and hope he doesn't ask you about it again. Being 'Ricardo Villalobos' is no excuse for such a terribly pretentious EP. This is horribly amateur sound design coupled with a nausiating and ultimately worthless hard panned triplet delay for 37 minutes. This EP also suffers from trying to do something that minimal techno hasn't done much before, which is adding muffled marching trumpets that I guess are supposed to remind the listener of Oktoberfest.
Maybe if the trumpet lines actually changed or better yet, were actually competent and good, I would like them. Ricardo Villalobos - Fizheuer Zieheuer. Fizheuer Zieheuer At the risk of being reductive, Fizheuer Zieheuer essentially consists of a lone boom-tick pattern- so basic it might serve as the house-music chapter of a beatmakers' tutorial- overlayed with two interlocking horn parts. The sample is in a major key and repeats ostinato-like through almost the entire track, occasionally complemented by a second horns sample from the introductory.
Its around for a while now and a special secret weapon in Ricardos sets all over the world, causing mayhem wherever he plays it. Categories or Search by site Search. Am I right in thinking the face on the sleeve is lifted from a Cocteau drawing?
Also, I find this a good release. A little long in-itself, but great for drifiting in and out of a mix. Masterpieceit s not even about electronic music- - - -. Please enter two more. The one thing that comes to my mind is: what is the puropse of a 40 minute vinyl? I guess flirting with the ladies standing next to the DJ, or taking a leak?
Ricardo Villalobos' way of making music fascinates me every time I hear one of his tracks. When Alcachofa first came out, I was excited like a little boy on Christmas Eve, and headed to the local record shop right away.
It's basically a waste of money. I really want to keep the crowd entertained by presenting different styles of music, instead of boring them with a 22 minute track.
If I had to pick one, I'd go for Pt. How about using it as a tool and mixing 3 tracks into it while this one plays out? Just as he does all the time. Why not make a 40 minute track?
Why not make a 2 hour track. Your comment is basically a waste of Internet. People play parts of this track a quite often. Never heard anyone play the whole thing through. My 2 cents. No - the only purpose is to have enough time on his shamanic hands to shag and take drugs. The Fizheuer Zieheuer sample is available for listening on the diduseethewords blog if you are interested just type ricardo villalobos stretch music play on google.
But Ricardo Villalobos succeeded in stretching the track out as they say on the diduseethewords blog by taking his time, letting the rhythm getting in yourself, etc. He is just decomposing the track in several elements, separating them and mixing them all up then, choosing when each one has to get in the game again, supported by its Minimal beat.
It's like a puzzle. A Minimal way puzzle. That's what electronic is all about. The track is just flat out too long. Everytime I play this record I keep looking back at the needle thinking "oh my god its only moved a quarter of an inch". Its not intricate or complex I would not recommend that anyone buy this.
